The Default User Problem in AI

Every technology product has a "default user" baked into its design assumptions. For most mainstream AI tools, that default user is white, male, college-educated, and English-speaking.

This isn't a conspiracy — it's a reflection of who's building these tools and who's funding them. But the consequences are real and measurable.

Where Mainstream AI Falls Short for Black Communities

Natural Language Processing

Voice recognition systems have significantly higher error rates for African American Vernacular English (AAVE). This isn't a minor inconvenience — it means Black users get worse results from voice assistants, transcription tools, and customer service bots.

Healthcare AI

Multiple studies have documented racial bias in healthcare AI systems. Algorithms trained primarily on data from white patients make less accurate predictions for Black patients — with potentially life-threatening consequences.

Financial AI

Credit scoring algorithms and loan approval AI have been shown to discriminate against Black applicants even when controlling for income and credit history. The "objective" algorithm often encodes historical discrimination.

What Equity-Centered AI Looks Like
